The Aztecs and Donna's ring

It's funny that I managed to time watching The Aztecs right after The Waters of Mars (I didn't check beforehand and didn't know what was going to happen), seeing as they're both about changing history.

Anyway, story first. This time it was Barbara who wanted to change things (though I can't blame her - I'm not too keen on human sacrifice either) and the Doctor who... well, he didn't exactly stop her, but he didn't want her to do it; he said that history can't be rewritten "not one line!" which later episodes contradict, of course, but maybe he just didn't feel like clarifying? The current state of affairs seems to be that certain events can't be rewritten, but everything else is in flux.

He did manage to accidentally (very doctor-like, isn't it?)get engaged to a sweet Aztec woman by sharing a cup of cocoa with her. His face when he realised what had happened actually reminded me of Ten! One is a very composed person otherwise. but what a charmer! Nothing has changed there; in Barbara's words: he really is an old rogue!

Moreover, he seems to genuinely care for her, and he does take the token she gave him with him in the end.

But here is the strange part; several times during the story I noticed his large, black, faceted ring glinting, reflecting light, and then it hit me: isn't that the same ring Donna was wearing in JE? The one that glinted with an obviously added effect? Perhaps I'm mistaken (it was rather hard to see the detail on the ring), and I've not watched enough old Who yet to make a qualified guess, but still... I'm hoping it means something.

I mean, in S4 the ring was obviously meant to be noticed, especially in the last couple of episodes - it was constantly shown - and when Ten says goodbye it glints meaningfully, just so that we shouldn't forget it. But then it isn't used for anything!

I know what I hope for, and that's that it's some sort of storage for a Time Lord regeneration. Donna would make an awesome Time Lord (and yeah, I know she gets married in EoT, but she could just bring him along, every Time Lord needs at least one Companion after all).

Well, at least it's inspired me for some not too AU fanfic!

I just had a crazy thought: what if Donna's the Doctor's mother?

Donna's ring is green (chalcedony, I think), while One's is black but they look very, very similar. One always wears it, and there is one serial in which he says it's much more than a ring --- something to do with power, so perhaps you're right in your hope. Also, consider the Meddling Monk's huge ring (citrin, I think, from what you can tell from black and white) and the Master's (Delgado's, that is) huge, similar-looking ring. The Rani wears lots of rings, too, but none that I can remember having a huge semi-precious gem stone.

Ring bling is a Time Lord thing.

I'm totally putting that on an icon. XD

If you really do, can I use it, too?

Have fun with the rest of the first series --- he's such a grouch but fun to watch!

Well, I don't know how to make icons at all and I don't have the patience or faith in my own ability to learn how, so you're way ahead me! Looking forward to it, and thank you!

One really is fun. Grouchy, but fun. Actually, it's really more that he's fun because he's grouchy.
