I don't understand this. The show is a guaranteed winner; it nearly always snags the biggest chunk of its audience, at least in the UK, and that audience, both in the UK and internationally, is substantial. The audience is faithful. Moreover, fans are willing to buy any number of related products.

Yet two production teams have quit, the approved budget keeps having to be cut because as time goes on, there's less and less money available, and this highly successful show has been put on hiatus for the second time in three years.

I'm getting a distinct Bonnie Hammer vibe. I wonder if someone at BBC Wales is a bit less than enthused about Doctor Who, just as Hammer--the former head of the SciFi/SyFy channel--wanted to get her channel away from the "geekiness" of science fiction and fantasy.

I don't think it is on hiatus, but it may be, as doyle suggests below, that the general hoo-hah with the Olympics would make them give it a winter start, which if they're having a mid season pause again, would mean some of the season would air in 2013.

Quite plausible given the BBC's hysterical attitude to what sport they can actually get the rights to.

Oh. So it's time for the Olympics AGAIN. Well, that would explain a lot--TV does tend to go mad about sports in general and the Olympics in particular.

And they're in London this time, so the British media madness is pretty much guaranteed to be turned up to 11.

Okay, that's probably the explanation. I can see the BBC stations getting a bit weird about being impressive. And since I don't pay any attention to winter sports (seriously, my winter sports are called "obtaining heating oil" and "trying not to freeze to death"), I wasn't even aware that it was time for yet another Olympics.
